The sun in a black puddle

on a bench in the marsh

shone so brightly

I almost was blinded

    so it is these days

    with all earth’s darkest windows

Don’t tell me the world ends

in the unbearable heat

of bombs and blood

and carbon—

    Everything  wrote Rilke

    is a patient gestation

    and then the bringing forth

So if I show your tentative hands

to the wound just under

my ribs    you must not

despair    It is only pregnant

    freshly    with life
