Eric Cyr is a writer, musician, and teacher from Duluth, Minnesota. As a songwriter and performer, he has released two albums with his band Cyr and the Cosmonauts. His writing has been published in Dappled Things, The Windhover, and St. Austin Review, where he won the St. Austin Review Prize in Fiction. an excerpt from “primogeniture”

As far back as I can remember, Dad worked at the Dirt Factory. After his shift he used to grab his guitar and sit out on the front porch singing John Prine songs and smoking cigarettes. He’d take a long drag and strum a C, ease out a thin lazy cloud, and tell us that smoking anything other than cigarettes was pretentious. For a while I chain smoked them just because of him, then switched to cigars in college before trying to give it up altogether. Now I smoke Marlboros, just when I really need one.
